Hospitals, Helmets, and Backpacks

Well it has been a week since my accident, but I’m healing well.  All things considered I got extremely lucky.

Lucky?  You got hit be a friggin’ car!

Well, yes I did, but the damage is mainly superficial.  It could have been much worse.  The reason I’m not still in Hospital is due to the equipment I was wearing.  Specifically my helmet and backpack.  These two (2) items saved me from more serious injuries.  Also my choice of clothing reduced even further injuries.

So how did these items help?  I mean riding a bike leaves you very exposed, so the risk of injury is quite high.  From an outsiders perspective, most cyclists appear almost naked.  Compared to a motorcyclist this assessment is fairly apt.  So what protection do cyclists actually have?

Australia’s Cycling Culture

I sit here eating my lunch looking out the window of the lunch room enjoying the beautiful vista of Perth’s Swan River. All I really want to be doing is getting out there and enjoying this wonderful winter sunshine. For me I’d chose to enjoy the sun on the back of a bike. Cycling around our wonderful city. For others they may chose to walk/jog around the river shores or perhaps just lazy in the sun with a good book. Sounds great huh?

Whilst enjoying this view and letting my thoughts wander; my eyes are draw to the mass of cars, trucks, and buses clogging up the southern freeway all clamouring to cross the Narrow’s Bridge. Do the drivers of these vehicles even notice the sunshine and river? Would they consider getting out of their steel coffins?

Australia gets it’s first female PM

Well, the slugfest that we were expecting in the battle for the top job fizzled out faster than it was announced. No sooner did we find out that there was to be a leadership ballot, than it was all done and dusted with Kevin Rudd falling on his sword.

As a result we now have our first female PM. Now this is momentous event for our nation, but I can’t help feel that we’ve been ripped off. Why? Simply because Julia Gillard got given the job due to internal Labor Party politics. The voters didn’t get a say; not that we directly vote for our PM in Australia.

So yep, we have a female PM for the first time in our history, but it was more by being in the right place at the right time than actually winning an election. For me this kinda diminishes the event. :(
